Notice something different? Yep, I’ve updated the blog with a new theme that fits my upcoming website design. Look forward to a matching website, as well as (hopefully) consistent updates to DeviantArt and Cafepress. Also, a facebook page will be in the works for special promotions and sneak peaks at upcoming illustrations and deals.

Business Ventures – Cafepress

This semester I’m enrolled in both Business Management for Photography and Digital Portfolio, which is essentially a web design class. The important part is that I’m in the process of forming a business plan (both for illustration and for portrait), and I’m developing a website that will eventually be the hub of this process.

However, I’m also looking into other marketing strategies. I plan to use this wordpress blog to reveal behind the scenes info, I intend to make a business page on facebook to do both promotions and sneak peaks of upcoming illustrations, and I intend to continue using Flickr to showcase a large variety of photography, since my main website will act as a portfolio.

One thing in this process I’ve started is to create a Cafepress shop to sell my personal illustrations as posters, t-shirts, journals, tote bags, and other miscellaneous items. Problem is, I’ve got to figure out how to market it. I’ve considered using Google’s Adwords, but I’m not quite sure that’s the method I want to use. For now, have a look:

The color themes temporarily match the upcoming website theme, and hopefully I’ve got it nicely categorized for customers to search through. In the meantime, I’m trying out Google’s Analytics tool to see if I can see any trends in traffic.

UCMO – Three Musketeers Production Photos

These are some of the pictures from UCMO’s Three Musketeers production. My fiance, Isaac, helped me shoot production photos. He took the wide shots, while I used the telephoto lens. I’ve often found that it is helpful to work with him on these photoshoots—it helps speed up the time and also keeps me from carrying two cameras or switching back and forth between lenses.

UCMO – Three Musketeers FOH

These are some of the front of house pictures I took for UCMO theatre department’s production of The Three Musketeers. It was an excellent show, and both me and my fiance thoroughly enjoyed it. With its comedy interspersed between the tragedy, and fun-to-watch swordplay involved, The Three Musketeers has been one of my favorite productions to watch at UCMO.

#6 Advanced Color Portrait – Alien Bee On-Location

Considering the weather hasn’t been particularly favorable for taking studio lights outside, and I don’t particularly like lugging around a twenty pound Vagabond, I decided to do my alien bees photoshoot indoors. And to do something different than I normally do for portrait class, I rounded up my friends and asked them to be part of a group photoshoot- one where we played to the idea of “If our life was a movie.”

#5 Advanced Color Portrait – High Key

We needed to do a high key assignment for Advanced Color Portrait, so I asked Jamie, who I knew from Hall Council, if she would be interested in being a model. In the meantime, I’m stil having some trouble with the hot shoe mount on the Rebel XS not wanting to trigger the flash, so I need to test that out and see if that’s related to the camera, the mount, or the sync chords. Luckily my 30D has it’s own spot for the sync chords.

On a side note– unless you want to strip out the background in Photoshop, High Key is best done with three, not two, lights.

Adv. Color Portrait – Senior Collages

For advanced color portrait class we need to make 4 10×20 collage layouts from the pictures we shot over semester. Since I’m working on my senior portraits business, I decided to do them all from my seniors shoots so that I could get practice with collages/book layouts.

#4 Adv. Color Portrait – Seniors

For advanced color portrait we needed to take pictures of high school seniors. Both to fulfill the class assignment and to get examples for my senior portraits business I’m starting up, I took pictures of four seniors for free, giving them one hour each for shooting (both inside the library with my alien bee lights and outside) and 10 fully retouched photos on a disk for them to print as they like.

Daylight In Studio

In Advance Studio we learned a trick to create a daylight appearance inside a studio setting. The trick is to use hot lights (continuous lighting) in conjunction with the daylight setting of white balance in your camera. To add some blue to the shadows, you can put a CTB (Color Temperature Blue gel) on the inside of a flash softbox (make sure it’s not too close to the bulb, though, to avoid damage). In the product shot I tried to bounce the flash off blue paper to get a sky effect, and my professor suggested lighting from beneath the table to get the rising sun gradient effect in the background. In the picture with peeps, I used the CTB method.

Advanced Color Portrait: Q-Flash In-class Shoot

Today in class, Professor Schmidt took the class outside around campus with two Q-Flashes (one for a soft fill, and one as a hairlight) and a bunch of pocket wizards (so a lot of flashes ensued). Pictures were taken in various areas and students were swapped out as models. The main problem was getting the flash to show up in the pictures. Raise the flash, less recycles and more chances of missing the shot with so many people shooting.
